PROGRAMME 2008/9

SEPTEMBER

4th - The Presidents Evening – Our new President Guy Mansford will present the evening’s entertainment followed by food and social chit-chat which will give new members a chance to find out about the Club whilst old members can renew acquaintances. Come along and enjoy a relaxed opening to our new season.

11th - Going For a P by Dave Johnston FRPS EFIAP/p – We start our season with slides from this master photographer who last visited us some years ago but who’s agreed to travel once again all the way from Stourport-on-Severn to show us how he set about achieving his qualifications. Expect some Brummie humour from this entertaining speaker.

18th - Spurn Point – A Unique Place In England by Martin Litchfield CPAGB – After judging for us last season I have asked Martin to return with his fascinating tour of the 3.5 miles of shifting sand dunes that is Spurn. His talk contains images of the sandy beaches, the lighthouses, the remains of WW1 & WW2 gun batteries and bunkers, the famous Spurn railway, the only permanently manned Lifeboat station in the country, the Humber pilots, the sunsets – and of course the wildlife. All he asks in return is a donation from the Club to the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust which of course we are pleased to make.

25th - Members Evening – The first chance of the season for new & old members to show their work be it prints, slides or digital. An informal evening so if you are a new member who has never shown their work before this is an ideal opportunity to break the ice and take the plunge! Don’t be shy.

Don’t forget to hand in your print titles to the Competition secretary for next weeks Competition

OCTOBER

2nd - 1st Print Competition Judged by Bill Hall AFIAP DPAGB BPE5* of Rolls Royce

9th - A Female In Fleet Street by Deborah Brady – Tabloid tales of a national photo-journalist. Deborah now lives in Rugby but she has worked in the male dominated world of photo-journalism in Fleet Street and has many amusing and entertaining stories of her experiences there – accompanied of course by her photographs. A digital presentation.

16th - The Photography of Dave Severn DPAGB LSWPP – A new print lecture from one of Beeston Camera Club’s best photographers comprising work from the last two years. The images are based on getting it right in the camera and will include Dave’s current project to produce a body of work from within 30 minutes drive of home. (Mind you have you seen how fast Dave drives?).

23rd - Travels In Monochrome by David Butcher ARPS – One of the few darkroom workers still on the circuit, David has shown us his stunning monochrome images before. This time he promises landscapes from his travels in Colorado, on a walk from Glasgow to Cape Wrath plus a tour of Mont Blanc. Sure to be a quality presentation.

Don’t forget to hand in your digital files and slides to the Competition secretary for next week’s Competition

30th - 1st Projected Image Competition judged by Bob Rowe ARPS of Nottingham & Notts

NOVEMBER

6th - One Roll Competition – Shoot 24 exposures on a slide film and arrange for them to be delivered to the One-Roll Secretary before you’ve seen them. It takes courage but you can do it! Please let the One-Roll secretary know if you intend to take part because it is important to plan the evening to avoid over-running.

13th - An Evening With William Cheung FRPS – A special event organised by Beeston Camera Club which will take place at Chilwell Road Methodist Church Hall . Wil is currently Editor of Photography Monthly and has a vast archive of images to call on. In this talk he promises a mixture of the old and the new and there will be an opportunity after the talk to ask questions. We are holding this event at a different venue in order to accommodate members of the public whom we are sure will want to attend. Beeston Camera Club members will be admitted free of charge – please show your membership card at the door – otherwise admission will be by ticket only. Price to be arranged. See www.williamcheung.co.uk

20th - Members Audio Visual Evening – A number of members are interested in setting their images to music and this year we have decided to make the evening competitive in that we shall ask the audience to vote for their favourite sequence. There may even be a prize if we can get the Treasurer in a good mood! No presentation should last more than 6 minutes, preferably less. Other than that there are no rules.

Don’t forget to hand in your print titles to the Competition secretary for next week’s Competition

27th - 2nd Print Competition judged by Dave Gibbins ARPS AFIAP APAGB BPE3* of Beeston Camera Club

DECEMBER

4th - The Alan Thompson Experience – The presentation by our very own Alan Thompson was such a success last season that he has been persuaded to delight us once more. I’m sure he’ll make it up as he goes along but I think the basic idea is that pre-selected volunteers will be required to take photographs of a model after setting-up their own lighting conditions. We’ll find out the actual details nearer the time but whatever happens one thing’s for certain – it would be a crime to miss it!

Don’t forget to hand in your digital files and slides to the Competition secretary for next week’s Competition

11th - 2nd Projected Image Competition judged by Peter Yeo FRPS DPAGB APAGB OF Gainsborough

18th - A Bit Of A Do - Yes it’s that side of the room against this side of the room time again. I don’t want to get paranoid about it but it’s about time this side of the room won! (Winning isn’t important of course, it’s the taking part.) Make a note to yourself. “Must take some funny slides” (Perhaps all yours are funny) And then we’ll have some food. We’ll leave the organisation of that to Eunice & Iris. At least that’s two members on the evening who will actually know what they are doing. Always good fun. And always this side of the room that loses. (Or is it that side of the room?)

25th - Christmas Day! Have a great one. Hope you get a new camera. And that you know how to use it.

JANUARY 2009

1st - New Years Day. Happy New Year. You can take your new camera on a walk and do some Best Of Beeston.

8th - The Boys At The Back –I’ve persuaded the reprobates at the back – where all the barracking comes from – to show some of their own work – so it will be a chance to get your own back and a fun start to the new year. (They do actually take some quite good photographs.)

15th - The Magic Of Mull by Robert Falconer – Robert was so well- received last year that we felt compelled to ask him again. This time he’s going to show us images from a period of 4 months he spent living and working on The Isle of Mull but he will also include slides from visits to the surrounding islands of Iona, Staffa & Ulva as well as The Treshnish Isles as he endeavours to capture the feel and mood of these magical places.

Don’t forget to hand in your print titles to the Competition secretary for next week’s Competition

22nd - 3rd Print Competition judged by Ralph Duckett MPAGB AFIAP of Burton-on-Trent

29th - NEMPF Presentation – The annual show in which we hope Beeston has been well represented. Now it’s your chance to see all the slides and digital entries so you can see what you think. Always a varied and entertaining evening. Make sure you enter some of your work in the Exhibition so that we can have a bumper Beeston entry.

FEBRUARY

5th - Print/Slide Battle with Rolls Royce & Derby City judged by Sue Wilson of Newark– An opportunity to compare our work against other Clubs this event has become a popular one in our calendar. It does require input from Club members so please sort out some of your best prints and/or digital images so that a choice can be made. Unfortunately slides are not acceptable for this particular event but it may be possible to have slides scanned so please ask early in the season.

12th - New Zealand – Land of The Long White Cloud by Gordon Gadsby – A welcome return for this popular speaker who is taking us on a trip to the beautiful islands in the southern hemisphere in the middle of our winter. He says he’ll explain the title on the night but we know there will be mountains and landscapes accompanied by Gordon’s anecdotes – a warming winter treat.

Don’t forget to hand in your digital files and slides to the Competition secretary for next week’s Competition

19th - 3rd Projected Image Competition judged by Ray Brammall ARPS DPAGB of Sheffield

26th - Foto-Synthesis by Clive Haynes FRPS & Martin Addison FRPS – Having been active in photography for some 30 years Clive & Martin now use digital imaging as their primary method of image making and reproduction. They share the joy and excitement of picture taking with the audience in a unique & entertaining presentation.

MARCH

5th - Passion For The Horse by Marilyn Shenton LBIPP AMPA ARPS – Centred around the famous gypsy horse fairs – notably Appleby- this is a digital and monochrome print presentation illustrating one of Marilyn’s passions and one which I know is shared by many of our members.

Don’t forget to hand in your digital files, slides and print titles to the Competition secretary for next week’s Competition

12th - Best Of Beeston Competition judged by Jim Hartje ARPS APAGB DPAGB EFIAP - This is nothing to do with taking photographs of Beeston but it is the Competition with a difference designed to test your all-round photographic ability. You choose 4 out of the following 6 subjects and submit 4 prints (can be mono&/or colour) or 4 slides or 4 digital images. The images are judged in the normal manner with marks out of 20 and the winner is the entrant with the highest aggregate score (out of 80). If you are not sure speak to the Competition Secretary

1. Body Parts
2. Glass
3. Animals
4. Street Furniture
5. Flowers
6. Enjoyment

19th - Before & After by Keith Naylor – Keith tells us how and why he shoots using RAW and then shows how he turns the image into a final print. This is not a technical Photoshop talk but a talk on composition.

26th - Still Clicking Away by Peter Yeo FRPS DPAGB APAGB – Peter’s been with us as a judge over the past few seasons. Here’s a chance for you to make your mind up about his work as he presents us a selection of his very latest prints in his own inimitable style.

Don’t forget to hand in your print titles, digital files and slides to the Competition secretary for next week’s Competition

APRIL

2nd - Final Competition judged By Steve Roper CPAGB of Nottingham Outlaws – Digital images, slides, mono and colour prints but only 1 entry in each category. The final competition is always themed and this year the theme is 'Relaxation'.

9th - Three Of A Kind – An evening that can be fun as long as you all bring along some of your work. All we ask you to do is submit 3 prints or 3 slides (you can bring more than one set if you wish) that are linked in some way. You can also do it with digital but you need to put all 3 images on 1 canvas sized at 1024 x 768 pixels so that all 3 images appear on the screen at the same time. It’s not competitive so don’t be afraid to take part.

16th - And Then There Were Two by Keith & Kate Brown - Keith gave us a well-received audio-visual presentation using slides a couple of years ago (you must remember Road To Hell). He and his wife Kate have now gone digital using Pictures To Exe so this promises to be an exciting audio-visual experience and a fitting climax to our lecture season.

23rd - The Hilda Thurman Competition – The second year of our new Competition which is judged by the audience (so no scathing judge’s comments then!). Digital prints only – mono or colour – but minimum Photoshop adjustments please and no composites.
The winner will receive the magnificent trophy donated to the Club by Hilda’s family. (Daughter Glenis and husband Owen are still members.)

30th - The Annual General Meeting - your chance to have your say in Club affairs.
